the compressor for the air ride has left us for better places fucked me over. Having driven it to work in back, I likely fucked all the srtuts/airbags. fuck

i have options. none of them I like presented in no specific order

Option one : get a new vehicle. It would would most likely have the unfortunate characteristic of being beige - beige-ish

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Option two: coilover conversion. i would be removing the soul of the allroad, a dark soul which has been staring me down with burning eyes. While a lower cost option, I bought the Allroad because I was fascinated by it.

https://www.arnottindustries.com/part_AUDI_yid17_pid124_gid943.html

Option three: Arnott system. Its quality. its also expesive. $2200

$1400 for the compressor and bags, $150 each front, $190 each

2 or 3, man. If you really love the air ride, 3, but if you love the car and want to hold onto your money, 2.

I’m oddly okay with coilovers for an A6.

1996 Camry XLE sedan for short term solution for $1500, spend nothing keeping it running, budget for more desirable vehicle as time progresses.

Could you, perhaps, buy the coils, and then rebuild the system, then sell the coils? Or are the struts and what not not serviceable?

Option 1 seems extreme unless there’s other stuff wrong with the car. If you love it, it would seem 2 or 3 are better, again, unless there’s more wrong with it. Between options 2 and 3, I don’t know that with the coilovers going for 1300, I don’t know that I’d really consider 2200 being that much more expensive, but the coilovers might have less issues long term. Hang in there, man, it seems like you have options. Not fun options, granted, but there have been worse.

its 13 years old with 180000 miles. I know the clutch will need to be replaced probably next spring. I have an exhaust leak. the cam seal leaks, the main rear seal leaks, while both those leaks are minor and can be put off, they are still there. the main rear seal could be done at the same time as the clutch and the cam seal, if it lasts another 15-20k miles, could be done at the same time as the timing belt.

I vote coilover conversion. I’ll let Dusty come recommend the Subie.

yea, the air bags and struts would be throw away. I could probably sell the coilovers at some point, but that would still mean buying new bags and struts. The only thing I could probably save by doing that is rebuilding the compressor, but i’d probably lose anything I save in the coilovers resale value lowering.

So go aftermarket. Cheaper and likely more reliable.

Usually the pump dying doesn’t take the air struts out, it’s the other way around.

Ahh, then I feel ya...that point where one event makes you start to question whether you continue to spend money on a car you like or move on. I’m not knowledgeable enough about what those all take/cost, so I won’t send worthless advice, so I’ll just leave it to I feel ya, man.

I’ll let the other Oppos discuss your broken Allroad.

A Perfect Circle is one of those bands I really loved in high school but my love for it faded along with my teenage angst. I have adult angst which is about bills and salary rather than whatever the fuck I was angsty about as a teenager. Favourite songs off of Thirteenth Step are The Outsider and Pet; Weak and Powerless is great, too; The Nurse Who Loved Me was better as the original from Failure.

Still, I expected more from the band - the only song I liked after Thirteenth Step was Passive, off of Emotion or Amotion or something. Even then, I think Passive was a collaboration with someone else which Maynard decided to release anyway, but I don’t remember the story or all the facts at this point. Passive kicks ass.

Would you pick Mer de Noms or Thirteenth Step?

i have to be in the mood for A Perfect Circle. Today is definitely once of those days.

Thats a hard choice between those two. Passive is an awesome song but I’d probably go with thirteen step. I’ve also moved on to 10,000 days album

Turbo squirrel said I was needed, so here I am. I hate to see you considering replacing the Allroad, I know you love that thing. But if you do that Outback XT is still available. It’s basically your old WRX in station wagon form. Same engine, same SI Drive, same AWD system. Plus more premium goodies. Two row sunroof, power heated seats for both driver and passenger, crazy soft leather, auto dual zone climate control, etc. Is good car. Is quick car.

just get another compressor bang it in, see how it goes from there.

i know that at least one of the bags has a leak. Thats a good part of why the damn thing crapped out. I also know the struts are shit so in reality even if they are not damaged they are still overdue for replacement

I read through all the replies and it seems like your options are pretty clear. Now you have to make a decision. This is where the brain and the heart go to war. The question is whether the car is worth repairing (brain) or if the car means enough to you to make it worth repairing (heart).

Let’s face it, this crowd is known for taking worthless pieces of junk and spending ridiculous amounts of cash to make them functional again. I still have a worthless piece of junk truck sitting in my driveway, much to my wife’s chagrin. I’m just having a hard time letting go.

So will you love it, or list it?

Kinja'd!!!

By the way, kudos on the music selection. If you like A Perfect Circle, you might also like Incubus (so says Pandora).

A couple issues. First, due to the rarity and the fact that most car buyers either don’t know they’re different from a normal Outback or don’t care, they can be notoriously hard to sell. Mine sat on the dealer lot so long he wound up putting it on eBay and selling it for a loss. Second, I don’t think it’s been advertised very well. I haven’t seen it on Craigslist, Auto Trader, or cars.com. And third, he didn’t clean/vacuum the interior very well before taking pics. I also don’t know what might be in the CarFax.

Side note, I did also just find this. This dealer has two more, but they’re automatics.

Incubus is good. I don’t like all their stuff but Vitamin and New Skin are my favorite.

They were both on my mountain biking playlist. Aqueous transmissions is a good one too but for more relaxed times.

There are times, in traffic, when I wish I could transmit aqueously to all the cars around me. They need to relax and go with the flow.

Damn, I was hoping with a compressor costing 1400, there would be enough room in there to save buy buying coils temporarily. You could also put off buying new struts + bags until you had rebuilt the compressor.

Kinja'd!!!

That’s another reason they sometimes don’t sell quickly, XTs hold their value like crazy (like a WRX or STI), and people who don’t know/care aren’t willing to pay the price when they can get a base Outback for about half the price. That said, it’s been on his lot long enough that he’s probably willing to make some kind of deal.

My advice would be to contact both dealers I linked you to, get the CarFax on both, ask them about history, records, and if they themselves have done timing belt/water pump/head gaskets. There are a few other things to look out for and questions to ask after that, but that’s a good starting point.

Kinja'd!!! DynamicWeight > OPPOsaurus WRX

Kinja'd!!!0

Well, that’s a tough choice then. I think you should spend the extra thousand on the air suspension though. It’s what you want. Are you sure the struts are fucked?

Kinja'd!!! OPPOsaurus WRX > DynamicWeight
11/11/2016 at 12:20

Kinja'd!!!0

i think the strut is what led to this whole issue. one was leaking and it caused the compressor to run more than it should have been. I was waiting on my next side project paycheck to buy the new struts and this happened before I could get to it
